Petersburg was founded in 1745 by German immigrants who named it after Peter Stover, a local landowner. The town was incorporated in 1831 and was the county seat of Grant County. During the Civil War, Petersburg was the site of a major battle in 1864. The town was also the site of a major railroad junction, which connected the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad with the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

Geography

Petersburg is located at 39°14′N 79°2′W (39.23, -79.03). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Petersburg is the county seat of Grant County and is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The town is home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a plastics factory, and a paper mill. The town is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,467 people, 1,039 households, and 645 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,039.2 people per square mile (788.2/km2). There were 1,139 housing units at an average density of 937.5 per square mile (362.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,845. About 13.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
