Keyser Summary

Keyser is a city located in Mineral County, West Virginia. It is the county seat of Mineral County and is located along the North Branch of the Potomac River. The population of Keyser was 5,439 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Keyser is located at 39°26′N 78°52′W (39.4333, -78.8667). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

History

The area that is now Keyser was first settled in 1750 by the family of John Keyser. The town was officially established in 1868 and was named after the Keyser family. The town was incorporated in 1891.
In the late 19th century, Keyser was a major coal mining center. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the town until the mid-20th century. The town was also home to several glass factories, which produced bottles and other glass products.

Economy

The economy of Keyser is largely based on the service industry. The town is home to several restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses. The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a plastics factory.
The town is also home to several educational institutions, including Potomac State College of West Virginia University and Mineral County Technical Center.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 5,439 people, 2,093 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,457.2 people per square mile (948.7/km2).
