Wood County Summary
Wood County is located in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, and is bordered by Ohio to the north, Marshall County to the east, Wirt County to the south, and Washington County to the west. The county seat is Parkersburg, and the county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 437 square miles is land and 4 square miles is water. As of the 2010 census, the population of Wood County was 86,956, making it the fifth most populous county in West Virginia.
History
Wood County was formed in 1798 from parts of Harrison and Ohio Counties. It was named for James Wood, who was the Governor of Virginia from 1796 to 1799. The county was originally part of the Northwest Territory, and was later part of the state of Virginia until 1863, when it became part of West Virginia.
During the Civil War, Wood County was a major center of Union activity, and was the site of several battles. The Battle of Parkersburg was fought in the county in 1861, and the Battle of Buffington Island was fought in the county in 1863.
Geography
Wood County is located in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, and is bordered by Ohio to the north, Marshall County to the east, Wirt County to the south, and Washington County to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 437 square miles is land and 4 square miles is water.
The county is mostly hilly, with the highest point being the summit of Little Hocking Hill, which has an elevation of 1,541 feet. The county is drained by the Little Kanawha River, which flows through the county from north to south.

The county is home to several large manufacturing companies, including DuPont, Bayer, and PPG Industries. The county is also home to several hospitals and medical centers, including Camden Clark Medical Center and St. Joseph's Hospital.
Retail is also an important part of the county's economy, with several large shopping centers and malls located in the county. The Grand Central Mall in Vienna is the largest shopping center in the county, and is home to over 100 stores and restaurants.

As of the 2010 census, the population of Wood County was 86,956, making it the fifth most populous county in West Virginia. The population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.3 years.
The racial makeup of the county was 94.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.

About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
