Mercer County Summary
Mercer County, West Virginia is located in the southern part of the state and is part of the Bluefield, WV-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was formed in 1837 from parts of Giles, Tazewell, and Monroe counties in Virginia. The county seat is Princeton, and the county is named for General Hugh Mercer, a Revolutionary War hero. As of the 2010 census, the population of Mercer County was 62,264.
Geography
Mercer County is located in the Appalachian Mountains of southern West Virginia. It is bordered by Summers County to the north, Monroe County to the east, Giles County, Virginia to the south, and Tazewell County, Virginia to the west. The county is divided into two distinct regions by the Bluestone River, which runs through the county from north to south. The western region is hilly and mountainous, while the eastern region is more level and rolling. The highest point in the county is located in the western region, at an elevation of 3,890 feet.
The county is home to several state parks, including Bluestone State Park, Pipestem Resort State Park, and Twin Falls Resort State Park. The Bluestone National Scenic River, a federally protected river, runs through the county.
Economy
The economy of Mercer County is largely based on coal mining and related industries. The county is home to several coal mines, including the Bluestone Mine, the largest underground coal mine in the state. Other industries in the county include manufacturing, health care, and tourism.
The county is also home to several colleges and universities, including Concord University, Bluefield State College, and New River Community and Technical College.

As of the 2010 census, the population of Mercer County was 62,264. The racial makeup of the county was 92.3% White, 4.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $43,945. The per capita income for the county was $19,845. About 15.2% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
Mercer County is served by the Mercer County Board of Education, which operates seven public schools. The county is also home to several private schools, including Princeton Christian Academy and Bluefield Christian Academy.
