Lewis County Summary

Lewis County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,372, making it the fourth-least populous county in West Virginia. Its county seat is Weston. The county was created in 1816 from Harrison County and named for Colonel Charles Lewis, an early settler and brother of Virginia Governor Andrew Lewis.

History

The first settlers in the area were mostly of English and German descent. The first county seat was located in Weston, which was established in 1818. The county was divided into two districts in 1820, with Weston as the county seat of the western district and Jane Lew as the county seat of the eastern district.
In 1824, the county seat was moved to Weston, where it remains today. The county was divided into three districts in 1836, with Weston as the county seat of the western district, Jane Lew as the county seat of the central district, and West Union as the county seat of the eastern district.

Geography

Lewis County is located in the north-central part of West Virginia, along the border with Pennsylvania. It is bordered by Harrison County to the north, Upshur County to the east, Barbour County to the south, and Preston County to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 439 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles is water.
The county is located in the Appalachian Mountains, and is mostly mountainous terrain. The highest point in the county is located on Spruce Knob, which has an elevation of 4,863 feet. The county is drained by the West Fork River and its tributaries.
