Hancock County Summary
Hancock County, West Virginia is located in the northern panhandle of the state, along the Ohio River. It is bordered by Brooke County to the north, Ohio to the east, Marshall County to the south, and the Ohio River to the west. The county seat is New Cumberland. The county was created in 1848 from parts of Brooke and Ohio counties and was named for John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Hancock County has a total area of 144 square miles, of which 140 square miles is land and 4 square miles is water. The terrain is mostly rolling hills, with some flat areas along the Ohio River. The highest point in the county is located at the intersection of the Ohio and West Virginia state lines, at an elevation of 1,068 feet.
As of the 2010 census, the population of Hancock County was 30,676, making it the fourth least populous county in West Virginia. The population density was 217 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
The median household income in Hancock County was $41,845 in 2019, and the median family income was $50,945. The per capita income was $21,945. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
