Lakota Summary

Lakota is a small city located in the northeastern corner of North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Nelson County and is situated on the banks of the Sheyenne River. The city has a population of 1,093 as of the 2010 census.

Geography

Lakota is located at 47°25'25" North, 98°17'45" West (47.423, -98.296). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The city is located in the Red River Valley, a flat, fertile region of the Great Plains. The Sheyenne River flows through the city, and is a major tributary of the Red River. The city is surrounded by agricultural land, and is located near the Turtle Mountains, a small range of hills in the region.

History

Lakota was founded in 1883, when the Northern Pacific Railway was built through the area. The city was named after the Lakota Sioux, who had inhabited the area prior to the arrival of European settlers. The city was incorporated in 1887.
The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and by 1910 had a population of 1,093. The city was a major center of commerce and transportation in the region, and was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, and a brickyard.

Economy

Lakota's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is surrounded by agricultural land, and is home to several grain elevators and other agricultural businesses. The city is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
