Geography
Lakota is located at 47°25'25" North, 98°17'45" West (47.423, -98.296). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The city is located in the Red River Valley, a flat, fertile region of the Great Plains. The Sheyenne River flows through the city, and is a major tributary of the Red River. The city is surrounded by agricultural land, and is located near the Turtle Mountains, a small range of hills in the region.
History
Lakota was founded in 1883, when the Northern Pacific Railway was built through the area. The city was named after the Lakota Sioux, who had inhabited the area prior to the arrival of European settlers. The city was incorporated in 1887.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945.
