Wells County is located in the northeastern corner of North Dakota, and is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. History
Wells County was established in 1884, and was named after the first governor of North Dakota, John Miller Wells. The county was originally part of the Dakota Territory, and was part of the original counties created when North Dakota became a state in 1889.
The first settlers in Wells County were mostly of German and Scandinavian descent, and the county was largely agricultural. The county was also home to several Native American tribes, including the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara.
Geography
Wells County is located in the northeastern corner of North Dakota, and is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It is part of the Devils Lake Micropolitan Statistical Area, and is the second-largest county in the state by area.
