Pukwana is a small town located in Brule County, South Dakota. It is situated on the Missouri River, approximately 20 miles east of Chamberlain. Pukwana was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The town was named after Chief Pukwana, a Brule Sioux chief. The town was originally a trading post for the Sioux Indians and was also used as a stopover for travelers on the Missouri River.
