Estelline Summary
Estelline is a small town located in Hamlin County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. Estelline is located in the southeastern corner of the state, near the border with Minnesota.
History
Estelline was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Minnesota. The town was named after Estelle, the daughter of one of the settlers. The town was incorporated in 1883.
Estelline was a farming community for many years, and the town was home to several grain elevators. In the early 1900s, the town was home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, a hardware store, a lumber yard, and a creamery.
Geography
Estelline is located at 44°25′17″N 97°14′17″W (44.421445, -97.238018). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Estelline's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is used for farming. The town also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a grocery store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 517 people, 212 households, and 140 families residing in the town. The population density was 862.5 people per square mile (333.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% were non-families. 32.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,845. About 8.3% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
