Central City, South Dakota is a small city located in the southeastern corner of the state. It is situated in the Black Hills region, and is the county seat of Lawrence County. The city has a population of approximately 1,500 people, and is the largest city in the county.

History

Central City was founded in 1876, when the Black Hills Gold Rush began. The city was originally named “Central”, but was changed to “Central City” in 1883. The city was incorporated in 1885, and was the first city in the Black Hills to be incorporated.
