Haakon County Summary

Haakon County is located in the western part of South Dakota, and is one of the state’s 66 counties. It is bordered by Butte County to the north, Meade County to the east, Pennington County to the south, and Lawrence County to the west. The county seat is Philip, and the largest city is Philip.

History

Haakon County was established in 1883, and was named after Haakon VII, the first king of Norway. The county was originally part of Meade County, and was created when the Dakota Territory was divided into counties. The county was organized in 1884, and the first county seat was located in Midland. In 1887, the county seat was moved to Philip.

Geography

Haakon County covers an area of 1,845 square miles, and is located in the Great Plains region of South Dakota. The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the western part of the county. The county is drained by the Cheyenne River, which flows through the county from north to south. The county is home to several lakes, including Lake Oahe, Lake Sharpe, and Lake Francis Case.
The county is mostly rural, with a few small towns and villages scattered throughout. The largest town is Philip, which is the county seat. Other towns include Midland, Quinn, and Wasta.

Economy
