Plainview was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The village was named for its flat terrain and wide open spaces. The first post office was established in 1872.
The village was incorporated in 1887. In the early 1900s, Plainview was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, a creamery, a lumberyard, and a general store.
In the 1950s, the village began to decline as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. The population of Plainview has remained relatively stable since then, with a population of 545 in 2010.

The economy of Plainview is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, as well as a grain elevator and a feed mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.9 people per square mile (701.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 763.3 per square mile (295.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 5.3% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
