Pierce Summary
Pierce is a city located in Pierce County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,743 at the 2010 census. Pierce is the county seat of Pierce County.
History
Pierce was founded in 1871 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The city was named after Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States. The first post office was established in 1872.
Geography
Pierce is located at 42°17'25" North, 97°37'45" West (42.290278, -97.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Pierce is a small agricultural community. The main industries are farming, ranching, and manufacturing. The city is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,743 people, 717 households, and 463 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,457.2 people per square mile (563.2/km2). There were 776 housing units at an average density of 645.2 per square mile (249.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.45% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.51% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $40,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
