Panama Summary

Panama is a small town located in Nance County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Platte River, approximately 20 miles south of Grand Island. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

The town of Panama was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Germany. The town was named after the Panama Canal, which was being built at the time. The settlers were attracted to the area by the fertile soil and the abundance of water from the Platte River.
The first post office was established in 1872 and the town was officially incorporated in 1887. The first school was built in 1875 and the first church was built in 1876.
The town grew steadily throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By 1910, the population had grown to over 500. The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, and a general store.

Geography

Panama is located at 40°45'25" North, 98°17'45" West (40.756944, -98.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Panama is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators and a feed mill. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 554.2 per square mile (213.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
