Lyons Summary

Lyons is a small city located in Burt County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Burt County.

History

Lyons was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the city of Lyons, France. The first post office was established in 1857. The town was incorporated in 1873.
In the late 19th century, Lyons was a major shipping point for grain and livestock. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a brickyard, and a furniture factory.

Geography

Lyons is located at 41°59'25" North, 96°17'45" West (41.990278, -96.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Lyons is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 514.2 per square mile (198.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.54% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females.
