Juniata Summary

Juniata is a small village located in Adams County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated along the Platte River, approximately 10 miles south of Hastings. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Juniata was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the Juniata River in Pennsylvania. The first post office was established in 1872. The town was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Juniata is located at 40°37'25" North, 98°20'45" West (40.623861, -98.345837). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Juniata is a small rural community with a population of 545 people. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being the main crops. There are also several small businesses in the area, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 152 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 365.2 per square mile (141.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 25.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
