Hastings Summary

Hastings, Nebraska is a city located in Adams County in the south-central part of the state. It is the county seat and the largest city in the county. The city is located on the banks of the Platte River and is part of the Hastings Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 24,907.

History

Hastings was founded in 1872 by Dr. Alfred D. Jones and named after his friend, Colonel Thomas Hastings. The city was originally a stop on the Union Pacific Railroad and was a major shipping point for cattle and grain. The city was incorporated in 1874 and was the first city in Adams County.
In the late 19th century, Hastings was a major center for the cattle industry and was home to several large stockyards. The city was also a major center for the sugar beet industry and was home to several sugar beet processing plants.

Geography

Hastings is located at 40°37'N 98°22'W (40.619, -98.367). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Hastings is a major center for agriculture and food processing. The city is home to several large food processing plants, including ConAgra Foods, Cargill, and Nestle. The city is also home to several large manufacturing companies, including Hastings Industries, Hastings Manufacturing, and Hastings Automotive.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 24,907 people, 9,945 households, and 6,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,241.3 people per square mile (867.2/km2). There were 10,717 housing units at an average density of 963.3 per square mile (372.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.3% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.2% of the population.
There were 9,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,890, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
