Geography

Clay Center is located at 40°59'25" North, 97°59'25" West (40.990278, -97.990278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Clay Center was founded in 1871 and was named after the county, which was named after Henry Clay, a prominent statesman from Kentucky. The city was incorporated in 1887.
Clay Center was a stop on the Union Pacific Railroad and was a major shipping point for grain and livestock. The city was also a major center for the production of brick and tile.

The economy of Clay Center is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators and a feed mill. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.
