Dodge County Summary

Dodge County, Nebraska is located in the eastern part of the state and is bordered by Saunders County to the north, Washington County to the east, Saunders County to the south, and Colfax County to the west. The county seat is Fremont, and the largest city is North Bend. The county was named after Augustus C. Dodge, a United States Senator from Iowa.

History

Dodge County was established in 1855 and was one of the original nine counties in Nebraska. The county was named after Augustus C. Dodge, a United States Senator from Iowa. The first settlers in the county were mostly of German and Irish descent. The first county seat was located in North Bend, but it was moved to Fremont in 1856.
The county was an important part of the Underground Railroad, with many of the county's residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves. During the Civil War, Dodge County was home to several Union Army regiments.

Dodge County covers an area of 845 square miles and is located in the eastern part of Nebraska. The county is bordered by Saunders County to the north, Washington County to the east, Saunders County to the south, and Colfax County to the west. The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the western part of the county. The Platte River runs through the county, and there are several small lakes and ponds scattered throughout the county.

The racial makeup of the county was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
