Wilton Summary

Wilton, Wisconsin is a small village located in Monroe County, Wisconsin. It is situated on the banks of the La Crosse River, and is part of the La Crosse-Onalaska Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

Wilton was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “New York Settlement”, but was later renamed Wilton in 1856 after Wilton, New York. The village was officially incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Wilton was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several cheese factories, a creamery, a flour mill, and a sawmill. The village also had a railroad station, which connected it to the rest of the state.

Geography

Wilton is located at 43°51'N 91°17'W (43.851, -91.17). The village is situated on the banks of the La Crosse River, and is part of the La Crosse-Onalaska Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land.

Economy

Wilton’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of other agricultural businesses. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile.
