Star Prairie Summary
Star Prairie is a small village located in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, United States. The village is situated on the banks of the Apple River, and is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 1,093.
History
Star Prairie was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "Star Prairie Station" due to its location on the St. Croix and Mississippi Railroad. The village was officially incorporated in 1876.
Geography
Star Prairie is located at 45°17'25"N 92°37'45"W (45.290278, -92.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Star Prairie is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The village also has a small industrial park, which is home to several small manufacturing companies.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,213.3 people per square mile (468.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 517.2 per square mile (199.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,945.
