History
New Holstein was founded in 1848 by German immigrants from Holstein, Germany. The city was named after the German city of Holstein. The first settlers were mostly farmers and the city was known for its dairy industry. In 1871, the city was incorporated and the first mayor was elected.
Geography
New Holstein is located at 44°7′17″N 88°7′17″W (44.1214, -88.1214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.45 square miles (6.34 km2), all of it land.
Economy
New Holstein’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several dairy farms and cheese factories, as well as a number of manufacturing companies. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,737 people, 1,521 households, and 990 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.3 people per square mile (586.2/km2). There were 1,611 housing units at an average density of 654.3 per square mile (252.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.19% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.19% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
