Marathon City was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Germany. The village was named after the nearby Marathon County, which was named after the Battle of Marathon in Greece. The village was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Marathon City was a major lumbering center. The village was home to several sawmills, and the lumber industry provided the main source of employment for the village. The lumber industry declined in the early 20th century, and the village shifted to a more agricultural-based economy.

Geography

Marathon City is located at 44°51'N 89°45'W (44.851, -89.75). The village is situated on the banks of the Wisconsin River, and is part of the Wausau, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land.

Economy

Marathon City's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of other agricultural businesses. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
