Maple Bluff Summary
Maple Bluff is a village located in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of Lake Mendota, just north of the city of Madison.
History
Maple Bluff was first settled in 1845 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "Maple Bluff Landing" and was a popular stop for steamboats traveling between Madison and Milwaukee. The village was officially incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Maple Bluff was a popular summer resort destination for wealthy families from Madison and Milwaukee. The village was home to several large estates, including the Governor's Mansion, which was built in 1906 and is now a National Historic Landmark.
Geography
Maple Bluff is located at 43°4′17″N 89°22′45″W (43.071445, -89.379093). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Maple Bluff is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby Madison for work. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,541 people, 645 households, and 437 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,717.8 people per square mile (664.2/km2). There were 690 housing units at an average density of 767.8 per square mile (296.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $62,500, and the median income for a family was $76,250. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $36,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $32,917. About 2.2% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
