History

Richland County was established in 1842, and was named after the rich soil found in the area. The county was originally part of the Wisconsin Territory, and was part of the original Wisconsin counties of Crawford and Iowa. The county was organized in 1845, and the first county seat was established in Ithaca. In 1851, the county seat was moved to Richland Center, where it remains today.
The county was largely agricultural in its early years, and the population grew slowly. The first railroad line was built in 1871, and this helped to spur economic growth in the area. The county also saw an influx of immigrants from Germany, Norway, and Sweden, who helped to shape the culture of the area.
