Portage County Summary

History

Portage County was established in 1836, and was named after the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway, which was used by Native Americans to travel between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. The county was originally part of the Wisconsin Territory, and was part of the original Wisconsin counties. The first settlers arrived in the area in the 1830s, and the county was officially organized in 1844.
The county was home to several Native American tribes, including the Menominee, Potawatomi, and Ojibwe. The first European settlers were mostly of German and Polish descent, and the county was largely agricultural. The first railroad line was built in 1871, connecting Stevens Point to Wausau. This allowed for the development of the county’s lumber and paper industries.

The racial makeup of the county was 94.2% White, 1.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
