Lincoln County Summary

History
The area that is now Lincoln County was originally inhabited by the Menominee and Chippewa Native American tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s, and the county was officially established in 1874. The county was named after President Abraham Lincoln, who had been assassinated in 1865.
The county was largely rural until the late 19th century, when the Wisconsin Central Railroad was built through the area. This allowed for the development of several small towns, including Merrill, Tomahawk, and Gleason. The county also saw an influx of immigrants from Germany, Poland, and other European countries.
