Douglas County Summary

History

The area that is now Douglas County was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe people. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s, and the county was officially established in 1854. The county was originally part of the larger La Pointe County, which was divided into Douglas and Bayfield Counties in 1854. The county was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a U.S. Senator from Illinois.
The county was largely rural until the late 19th century, when the logging industry began to take off. The logging industry was the primary source of employment in the county until the early 20th century, when the mining industry began to take off.
