History

The area that is now Chippewa County was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe people, who were part of the Algonquian-speaking people. The Ojibwe were the first to settle in the area, and they were joined by French fur traders in the late 17th century. The area was part of the Northwest Territory until 1836, when it became part of the Wisconsin Territory. Chippewa County was officially established in 1845, and was named after the Chippewa River.
The county was largely rural until the late 19th century, when the lumber industry began to boom. The lumber industry was the main source of employment in the county until the early 20th century, when the dairy industry began to take over.
