Buffalo County Summary

The county seat is Alma, and the largest city is Mondovi.

History

Buffalo County was established in 1853, and was named after the Buffalo River, which flows through the county. The first settlers arrived in the area in the early 1840s, and the county was organized in 1853. The first county seat was located in Fountain City, but was moved to Alma in 1854.
The county was largely agricultural in the 19th century, with the main crops being wheat, oats, and corn. The county also had a thriving lumber industry, with several sawmills located in the area.

Buffalo County is located in the western part of Wisconsin, and is part of the La Crosse-Eau Claire metropolitan area.
