Belleville Summary
Belleville is a small city located in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Sugar River, about 20 miles south of Madison, the state capital. The population was 4,821 at the 2010 census.
History
Belleville was first settled in 1845 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after the French city of Belleville, which means “beautiful town”. The first post office was established in 1848. The city was incorporated in 1856.
In the late 19th century, Belleville was a major center for the production of cheese and butter. The city was also home to several breweries, including the Belleville Brewing Company, which was founded in 1872.
Geography
Belleville is located at 43°7′17″N 89°25′17″W (43.1214, -89.4214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Belleville’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of food processing plants. The city is also home to several small businesses, including a number of restaurants and retail stores.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,821 people, 1,945 households, and 1,232 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,179.2 people per square mile (841.2/km2). There were 2,072 housing units at an average density of 935.2 per square mile (361.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $51,944. Males had a median income of $36,944 versus $25,944 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,944. About 5.2% of families and 7.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
