Walthall County Summary

Walthall County is located in the southeastern corner of Mississippi, and is bordered by Marion County to the north, Pike County to the east, Lincoln County to the south, and Lawrence County to the west. The county seat is Tylertown, and the county has a total area of 437 square miles.

History

Walthall County was established in 1877 from parts of Marion and Pike counties. It was named for Edward Cary Walthall, a Confederate general and U.S. Senator from Mississippi. The county was originally part of the Choctaw Nation, and the first settlers were mostly of Choctaw and Chickasaw descent. The county was largely agricultural, with cotton and corn being the main crops.

Geography

Walthall County is located in the southeastern corner of Mississippi, and is bordered by Marion County to the north, Pike County to the east, Lincoln County to the south, and Lawrence County to the west. The county has a total area of 437 square miles, of which 434 square miles is land and 3 square miles is water. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part of the county. The county is drained by the Leaf and Bogue Chitto rivers.

Economy

Walthall County’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The main crops are cotton, corn, soybeans, and wheat. The county also has a thriving timber industry, and there are several sawmills in the area. The county is also home to several manufacturing plants, including a furniture factory and a paper mill.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, Walthall County had a population of 15,443. The racial makeup of the county was 79.3% White, 18.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,917. The per capita income for the county was $15,945. About 19.2% of families and 23.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.2% of those under age 18 and 18.2% of those age 65 or over.
