Geography

Pontotoc County is located in the northeastern part of Mississippi, and is bordered by Union County to the north, Lee County to the east, Chickasaw County to the south, and Tippah County to the west. The county has a total area of 545 square miles, of which 544 square miles is land and 1 square mile is water. The terrain is mostly rolling hills, with some flat areas in the northern part of the county. The county is drained by the Tallahatchie River and its tributaries.

As of the 2010 census, there were 29,919 people, 11,717 households, and 8,072 families residing in the county. The population density was 55 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 79.2% White, 18.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $32,917, and the median income for a family was $41,845. The per capita income for the county was $17,845. About 17.2% of families and 21.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 17.2% of those age 65 or over.

Economy

Pontotoc County is primarily an agricultural county, with the main crops being cotton, soybeans, corn, and wheat. The county also has a strong manufacturing sector, with companies such as Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, Yokohama Tire Corporation, and Bemis Manufacturing Company having plants in the county. The county also has a strong tourism industry, with attractions such as the Natchez Trace Parkway, the Tupelo National Battlefield, and the Tupelo Automobile Museum.

Pontotoc County was established in 1836 and was named after the Native American tribe of the same name. The county was originally part of the Chickasaw Cession of 1832, and the first settlers arrived in the area in the early 1830s. The county seat was established in Pontotoc in 1837.
