Clay County Summary

History
Clay County was established in 1871 from portions of Chickasaw, Lowndes, and Monroe counties. It was named for Henry Clay, a prominent statesman and senator from Kentucky. The treaty ceded the land to the United States in exchange for money and other benefits.
