Jefferson County Summary
Jefferson County, Colorado is located in the north-central part of the state and is the fourth most populous county in the state. It is bordered by Clear Creek County to the north, Gilpin County to the east, Denver County to the south, and Boulder County to the west. The county seat is Golden, and the largest city is Lakewood.
History
Jefferson County was established in 1861 as one of the original 17 counties of the Colorado Territory. It was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. The county was originally part of Arapahoe County, but was split off in 1874.
The county was largely rural until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly due to the growth of Denver and the surrounding suburbs. The population of Jefferson County has grown steadily since then, and it is now one of the most populous counties in the state.
Geography
Jefferson County covers an area of 807 square miles, making it the fifth largest county in Colorado. The county is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and is home to several mountain peaks, including Mount Evans, which is the highest peak in the county at 14,265 feet.
The county is divided into two distinct regions: the Front Range and the High Plains. The Front Range is located in the western part of the county and is characterized by rolling hills and valleys. The High Plains are located in the eastern part of the county and are characterized by flat plains and prairies.
The county is home to several rivers and streams, including the South Platte River, Clear Creek, and Bear Creek. The county also contains several reservoirs, including Chatfield Reservoir, Bear Creek Reservoir, and Standley Lake.
