Douglas County Summary

Douglas County, Colorado is located in the south-central part of the state and is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the seventh most populous county in Colorado, with a population of 315,520 as of the 2019 census. The county seat is Castle Rock.

History

Douglas County was established in 1861 as one of the original 17 counties of the Colorado Territory. It was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a U.S. Senator from Illinois who was the Democratic Party's nominee for President in 1860. The county was originally part of Arapahoe County, but was split off in 1864.

Geography

Douglas County covers an area of 844 square miles, making it the third largest county in Colorado. It is located in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and is bordered by Elbert County to the north, El Paso County to the east, Teller County to the south, and Jefferson County to the west. The county is divided into two distinct regions: the eastern plains and the western foothills. The eastern plains are characterized by rolling hills and grasslands, while the western foothills are more mountainous and heavily forested.
