Hayden Lake is a city located in Kootenai County, Idaho, United States. It is situated on the northern shore of Hayden Lake, a natural lake that is the largest in the county. The city is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Coeur d'Alene and is part of the Coeur d'Alene metropolitan area. The population of Hayden Lake was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area around Hayden Lake has been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years. The Coeur d'Alene Tribe has lived in the area since the late 1700s. The first non-native settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s. The area was originally known as "Hayden's Ferry" after the ferry that was operated by the Hayden family. The city was officially incorporated in 1908.

Geography

Hayden Lake is located at 47°45'25"N 116°48'17"W (47.7569, -116.8047). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

The economy of Hayden Lake is largely based on tourism. The city is home to several resorts and marinas that attract visitors from all over the region. The city is also home to several golf courses, including the world-renowned Circling Raven Golf Club. The city is also home to several wineries and breweries, as well as a variety of restaurants and shops.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 871.4 people per square mile (336.7/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 400.5 per square mile (154.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
