Fruitland Summary
Fruitland is a city located in Payette County, Idaho, United States. It is part of the Boise City–Nampa metropolitan area. The population was 4,717 at the 2010 census, up from 3,717 in 2000.
Geography
Fruitland is located at 43°59′45″N 116°56′45″W (43.995833, -116.945556). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
History
Fruitland was founded in 1883 by the Oregon Short Line Railroad. The city was named for the abundance of fruit trees in the area. The first post office was established in 1884.
Fruitland was incorporated in 1907. The city was a major shipping point for potatoes, apples, and other produce.
Economy
Fruitland is home to several major employers, including Simplot, a food processing company, and the Fruitland Co-op, a grain elevator and feed mill. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,717 people, 1,521 households, and 1,039 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,717.2 people per square mile (662.3/km2). There were 1,619 housing units at an average density of 745.2 per square mile (287.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $36,944. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
