Shoshone County Summary
Shoshone County is located in the northern part of the state of Idaho, in the United States. It is bordered by Kootenai County to the north, Bonner County to the east, Benewah County to the south, and Latah County to the west. The county seat is Wallace, and the largest city is Kellogg. The county was established in 1864 and named after the Shoshone Native American tribe.
Geography
Shoshone County covers an area of 1,722 square miles, making it the fourth-largest county in Idaho. The terrain is mostly mountainous, with the Coeur d'Alene Mountains to the east and the Bitterroot Range to the west. The highest point in the county is the summit of Mount Coeur d'Alene, at 8,717 feet. The county is drained by the Coeur d'Alene River and its tributaries, including the St. Joe River, the North Fork Coeur d'Alene River, and the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River.
