Wrightsville is a city located in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Wrightsville was founded in 1871 by the Wright family, who had moved to the area from Tennessee. The town was named after the family and was incorporated in 1881. The town was a major stop on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway, which ran from St. Louis to Little Rock. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
Geography
Wrightsville is located at 34°45'25" North, 92°20'17" West (34.756944, -92.338333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Wrightsville's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The city also has a large retail sector, with several stores and restaurants located in the downtown area.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 837.2 people per square mile (323.7/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 357.2 per square mile (138.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 18.45% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
