Wilson Summary
Wilson is a city located in Mississippi County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Blytheville, Arkansas Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Wilson was founded in 1873 by William Wilson, a former Confederate soldier. The town was originally known as Wilson's Station, and was located on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. The town was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Wilson is located at 35°51'25" North, 90°17'45" West (35.856944, -90.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Wilson's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several poultry processing plants, as well as a number of other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,811 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 681.2 per square mile (263.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.45% White, 40.45% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.50% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $20,938, and the median income for a family was $25,000. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,845. About 24.2% of families and 28.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 37.2% of those under age 18 and 24.2% of those age 65 or over.
