History
Des Arc was founded in 1853 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of DeValls Bluff. The town was named after the Des Arc River, which flows through the area. The river was named by French explorers in the late 1700s, who named it after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
The town was incorporated in 1856 and quickly became an important trading center for the surrounding area. The town was also a major stop on the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad, which connected the two cities.

There were 486 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
