Lawrence County Summary
Lawrence County, Arkansas is located in the northeastern corner of the state and is bordered by Missouri to the north, Randolph County to the east, Greene County to the south, and Sharp and Independence counties to the west. The county seat is Walnut Ridge, and the county has a total area of 576 square miles. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,415.
History
Lawrence County was formed in 1815 from parts of Greene and Izard counties. It was named for Captain James Lawrence, a naval hero of the War of 1812. The first settlers in the area were mostly from Tennessee and Kentucky, and the county was largely agricultural. The first county seat was located in the town of Davidsonville, but it was moved to Walnut Ridge in 1875.
During the Civil War, Lawrence County was divided in its loyalties, with some supporting the Union and some supporting the Confederacy. The county was the site of several skirmishes, including the Battle of Chalk Bluff in 1863.
In the late 19th century, the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway built a line through the county, connecting it to the rest of the state. This led to an economic boom in the area, as the railroad brought new businesses and industries to the county.

The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 574 square miles is land and 2 square miles is water.
The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern and western parts. The Black River runs through the county, and there are several small lakes and ponds. The county is mostly forested, with oak, hickory, and pine trees.
Economy
The economy of Lawrence County is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The county is home to several large poultry farms, as well as cattle and hog farms. The county also has several manufacturing plants, including a paper mill and a furniture factory.
The county is also home to several tourist attractions, including the Davidsonville Historic State Park, the Lawrence County Museum, and the Lawrence County Fair.

As of the 2010 census, the population of Lawrence County was 17,415. The racial makeup of the county was 92.3% White, 4.7% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
