History

Lafayette County was established in 1827 and named for the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The county was originally part of Hempstead County, but was later divided into its own county. The first settlers in the area were Native Americans, followed by French and Spanish settlers in the early 1800s.
The county was home to several Civil War battles, including the Battle of Lewisville in 1863. The county was also home to the infamous “Hanging Tree”, where several African Americans were lynched in the late 1800s.
