The county seat is Hampton, and the county has a total area of 545 square miles. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,368, making it the second least populous county in Arkansas.

History

Calhoun County was formed in 1857 from parts of Bradley and Union counties. It was named for John C. Calhoun, a prominent South Carolina politician and statesman. The county was largely rural and agricultural until the early 20th century, when the timber industry began to take off. The county was also home to several small towns, including Hampton, which was founded in 1883 and became the county seat in 1884.
