Ashley County is located in the southeastern corner of Arkansas, and is bordered by Chicot County to the north, Drew County to the east, Desha County to the south, and Bradley County to the west. The county seat is Hamburg, and the largest city is Crossett. Ashley County is part of the Pine Bluff, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Ashley County was established in 1848 and named after Chester Ashley, a prominent lawyer and politician from the area. The county was originally part of Chicot County, but was split off due to its large size. The county was largely rural until the early 20th century, when the lumber industry began to boom in the area. The lumber industry brought jobs and economic growth to the area, and the population began to grow rapidly.

Geography

Ashley County is located in the southeastern corner of Arkansas, and is bordered by Chicot County to the north, Drew County to the east, Desha County to the south, and Bradley County to the west. The county has a total area of 845 square miles, of which 837 square miles is land and 8 square miles is water. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part of the county. The county is drained by the Saline River, which flows through the county from north to south.

The economy of Ashley County is largely based on agriculture and forestry. The county is home to several large timber companies, and the lumber industry is a major employer in the area. The county also has a large poultry industry, and is home to several large poultry processing plants. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
