Pike County Summary

History

Pike County was established in 1821, and was named for General Zebulon Pike, who was an explorer and soldier in the War of 1812. The county was originally part of the Creek Nation, and was part of the Treaty of Fort Jackson in 1814. The county was created from parts of Henry, Dale, and Montgomery counties.
The county was home to several Native American tribes, including the Creek, Choctaw, and Cherokee. The first settlers in the area were mostly Scots-Irish, and the county was largely agricultural. The county was also home to several plantations, and the economy was largely based on cotton production.
