Fayette County covers an area of 602 square miles, of which 599 square miles is land and 3 square miles is water. The terrain is mostly rolling hills, with the highest point being 1,000 feet above sea level. The county is drained by the Mulberry Fork of the Black Warrior River, which flows through the center of the county. The county is also home to several small lakes, including Lake Fayette, Lake Lamar, and Lake Walker.

Fayette County has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 64°F, and the average annual precipitation is 52 inches.
