History
Clay County was created in 1866 from parts of Randolph, Talladega, and Tallapoosa counties. It was named for Henry Clay, a prominent statesman and senator from Kentucky. The county was originally part of the Creek Nation, and the area was home to several Native American tribes, including the Creek, Cherokee, and Choctaw.
The first settlers in Clay County were mostly farmers from Georgia and the Carolinas. The county was largely agricultural, with cotton and corn being the main crops. The county also had several sawmills and gristmills, as well as a few small towns.
